A car is a valuable asset. Paintwork, leather and vinyl are like the skin on humans. Our skin gets damaged if we don’t wear sunscreen. Likewise so does the skin on our cars.
Paintwork, leather and vinyl need moisturising and protectants. These sunscreens should be applied to your car every 3 months. Wax is sunscreen for your paintwork. Likewise there are moisturizers and sunscreens for leather and vinyl.
The average thickness of modern paint is thin. About the thickness of a ‘post it note’. These are the layers on a typical modern car:
Wax (your car’s sunscreen for paint)
Clear coat (protects the ultra thin colour coat)
Colour coat (about thickness of a post it note)
Primer (stops metal from rusting)
Base metal
The wax gets worn off by sun & rain. And even just by the corrosive elements in the air which are invisible to the eye, but adhere to the top surface and if not regularly cleaned and most importantly waxed every three months the wax protectant wears away exposing the clear coat or paint. If left too long the damage keeps going down the layers until the only thing that will fix it is a paint re-spray. You’ve seen cars with faded patches on the bonnet or roof? Regular waxing would have prevented this deterioration.
